30 March 2023 — The Makati Business Club (MBC) signed an agreement with San Juan LGU to install safer streets for bike commuters and pedestrians along Pinaglabanan Street in San Juan City.

This initiative is done under MBC’s Business For Biking Program in partnership with MBC member Pilipinas Shell Corporation.

Through this collaboration, asphalt art will be installed in front of San Juan City Hall and Pinaglabanan Elementary School along Pinaglabanan Street. Asphalt art is a visual art intervention designed to calm traffic and prioritize the safety of bike commuters and pedestrians on busy streets.

The asphalt art will be painted by alumni of Shell’s National Student Art Competition, including San Juan residents. The project at Pinaglabanan Street is expected to be unveiled in Q2 2023.

Pilipinas Shell Conrad Parizal (Social Performance – Social Investment Manager), MBC Program Manager Trisha Teope, and San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora signed the agreement.

“In the pandemic, we really saw how there was a paradigm shift in how people move around our cities, said Mayor Zamora, citing an increase in the number of people using bikes for transport. “In 2020, we are proud that San Juan City was recognized as one of the top bike-friendly cities in Metro Manila by the Mobility Awards,” he added.

“Nagagalak ako dahil naging katuwang natin ang bayan ng San Juan at MBC para sa pagpapanatili ng kaligtasan sa kalsada, ng ating mga naglalakad, siklista, at estudyante, bilang bahagi ng Powering Progress ng Pilipinas Shell, said Conrad Parizal.

“We recognize that Filipinos rely on walking, cycling, and public transport, so it’s sad to know that these are also the most vulnerable road users,” said Trisha Teope. “Through this, we hope to prioritize their safety and establish San Juan’s leadership in this advocacy,” she added.

MBC’s Business For Biking Program in partnership with Pilipinas Shell Corporation aims to promote sustainable and inclusive transportation policies and infrastructure to help mobilize the workforce and boost socio-economic recovery. The program was first launched in 2021 in partnership with the Embassy of the Netherlands in the Philippines.
