MBC and Shell Pilipinas Corporation Turnover 24 Bike Racks to Quezon City LGU, Benefiting 56 cyclists
8 September 2023 – Representatives from Makati Business Club and Shell Pilipinas Corporation turned over twenty-four (24) bike racks to Quezon City.
QC Assistant City Administrator Albert Kimpo led the turnover, emphasizing the role of the private sector in promoting active transport: “Very few [establishments] have bike facilities, and we’re elated to see the desire to participate coming from the private sector, since we will need to install these at private establishments.” This was echoed by Green Transport Office Division Head Ms. Cora Medes who mentioned that the LGU has recorded over 22,000 cyclists in seventeen (17) areas in QC.
“It’s important for people to get to work where they want to go, and to go home to their families. Only 4% have cars, only 41% have motorcycles, everyone else relies on active or public transport. 36% have bicycles, and that’s the market we’re serving.” said MBC Executive Director Coco Alcuaz.
The bike racks will be installed at Quezon Memorial Circle and Amoranto Sports Complex, benefiting fifty-six (56) cyclists at a time. The inverted-u design of the bike racks is recommended by the US Department of Transport for the design’s capacity to fit different types of bicycles and scooters.
Project lead and Shell Pilipinas Corporation VP for Corporate Relations Serge Bernal was also present. “Our bike racks represent the evolution of Shell, that we take care of not just our friends who own vehicles but also the commuting public.” He continued, “Shell is here to share the vision of like-minded organizations and institutions especially on safety and sustainability. We’re here to help power progress together, leveraging our experience on energy and mobility.”
Shell Pilipinas Corporation is the main partner of MBC’s Business for Biking Program. Launched in 2021 in partnership with the Embassy of the Netherlands and now with Shell Pilipinas, MBC’s transportation advocacy is aimed at safe, reliable, and accessible mobility especially for the people who need it most – the 94 percent who don’t own cars and the 63 percent who don’t own motorcycles.
Monitoring of the project and its impact will continue in the coming months.
